When we set out to plan our WI event at the Abbey, we had no idea what a success it would be.
‘WI day’ is a national celebration of the first WI that opened in the UK, on 16th September 1915. It was at Llanfair PG on Anglesey.
Some of our own WI’s had displays with photographs of their activities, outings and parties, others chose to sell food and craft items. You were in for a treat with Cakes, Chutneys and Jams all made by members; which were quickly snapped up by visitors. Cushions, cards, hats, scarves and jewellery were also popular.
The Federation sub-teams were also on hand to show what they had been up to, over the course of the year. Our advisors were kept busy with questions about joining the WI.
We had some entertainment with Hand Bells, a Ukulele Band and Telford Community Ensemble .
Our Federation ‘WI Show’, with a change of venue this year, was also held at the Abbey. Members were competing for the coveted trophies, with displays as teams and individual entries. The photographic class entries were stunning, not forgetting the quality and detail displayed in other entries which included hand painted stones, Christmas decorations, knitting, flower arranging, cakes, all making up the different class exhibits. We welcomed the High Sheriff Mandy Thorn who had the honour of presenting the awards for the Show.
Our refreshment ladies were kept very busy, selling out of cakes by lunchtime!
Everyone that attended said what a fabulous day it was and asked if we were we going to do it again!!!
